In recent weeks I’ve read, heard and watched many people talk about choosing what we wish to put out there on social media. Many times we wish to share a beautiful moment, but when that is all we are sharing, people on the other side may view our lives as such. People on the other side might believe that they lead a super boring unbeautiful life with no happy family moments. We are all the people who post. We too are also all the people on “the other side.”
I really wanted to share a recent “vacation” I took with my family, but for this reason I hesitated to do so. Other’s might see a gorgeous view or lake with smiling kids and think “that Devorah, she’s got all her shit together.” In reality Devorah has a life just like you. Lots of tedious work, tons of crap and a few moments of fun.
Recently my family, my husband’s entire family and I went on vacation together. This is something we have done almost every year. Except, we always go camping. Camping was fun when I was a bit younger. Being best buddies with nature is cool. Except when you get older, the glory kind of wears thin. The tents, spiders, bears, snakes and frog filled toilets just ain’t glorious anymore. The relentless rain, no refrigerator or bathroom handy.
Yes there are nice family barbeque’s, but there are also rained out ones too. There are exciting tents… yet those too can get washed out. There are fun swims in the lake…. Then there’s family members losing their only car keys in the lake. The cars that don’t start or break down, the car windows that are smashed when one family member sleeps with his legs against it because he was too scared of the bears.
I have never posted those parts, just the airbrushed versions with gorgeous scenery. No one hears a kid howling in the background of the photo. No one smells the remnant of a skunk. All you see are the smiles. Camping is fun, but it’s exhausting. Relationships get strained in a new way. It’s hard to get a break. Cousins fight, bully, exclude. They also play, bike, hike and let loose.
Attached are some airbrushed pictures. They make me happy remembering just the happy beautiful times. If you choose to look at them, please remember. They are just air brushed. I’m sure you’ve got some beautiful moments too.
